Miami-Dade County School Board member Luisa Santos proffered agenda item H-10 at the meeting of June 17 directing the superintendent of schools to review school board policies and procedures related to the attendance boundary process, which determines assigned schools in the district.
If deemed appropriate, the superintendent will initiate rulemaking to modernize the school district’s attendance boundary, school choice, and student assignment policies to align with Magnet and Choice timelines, so families can make informed and reliable decisions before boundary changes take effect.
The item calls for additional support for families navigating school transitions, stronger alignment between enrollment decisions and long-term facilities planning, and opportunities for families to express interest in proposed school programs or configurations before decisions are finalized.
Revised processes and policies would make it easier for families to stay informed and participate in school planning decisions by expanding multilingual communication, virtual engagement opportunities, public data dashboards, and transparent reporting on how community feedback is used. Regular updates on enrollment trends and school planning decisions also would assure families have greater visibility into the future of their schools.
The item also asks the district to review existing student assignment policies to ensure they reflect today’s educational landscape, where families have access to a growing variety of school choice options, specialized programs, and grade-level configurations.
“Our goal is to give families, staff, and community members earlier, clearer information to make informed decisions, while also ensuring resources are invested where they are needed most. With updated mechanisms and processes for community engagement, we can support neighborhood schools and invest in innovative educational opportunities,” Santos said.
Pursuant to agenda item H-10, administration will present to the school board findings, recommendations, and any proposed policy revisions to the Personnel, Student, School & Community Support Committee no later than July.
